Job Description

The primary role of the Mathematics Instructional Leader is to support teaching and learning by working in conjunction with math department faculty to assist in research, curriculum design, and professional development to improve and accelerate student achievement.  A Math Instructional Leader is a certified math teacher who demonstrates leadership skills and has expertise in curriculum design, instructional strategies, assessment, child development, and knowledge of adult learning theory.

 

PROPOSED MODEL:

.4 FTE for grades 6-8

 

Instructional Leaders report to the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction for oversight of leadership program and building level administrator for classroom performance.

 

RESPONSIBILITES: In cooperation with the designated administrator, Instructional Leaders will be responsible for:

 

  1. Coordination of the 6-8 or 9-12 Mathematics Curriculum Development

 

  1. Ensure that the vertical integration of the 6-12 mathematics program is smooth and lacks redundancy
  2. Oversee the integration of the Connected Math (6-8 leader) and Core-Plus Math (9-12 leader) Programs with the Common Core State Learning Standards:

 

      1. Guide and support teachers in the design of units and lessons to bridge any gaps between the NYS Common Core Standards and the Connected Math/Core-Plus Mathematics Programs
      2. Identify and provide additional resources as needed for the key focus areas of need as determined through data analysis and SED guidance
      3. Guide and support teachers in the design and implementation of rigorous assessments including resulting data analysis.
      4. Participate in state & regional level professional development opportunities as they pertain to 6-12 CC Standards implementation

 

 

  1. Guide the implementation of the 6-8 or 9-12 Mathematics Program

 

  1. Communicate district expectations across buildings/teams/courses in regards to the implementation of our mathematics programs in order to meet the Common Core Learning Standards (including the Mathematical Principles)
  2. Participate in team planning meetings
  3. Support teachers in helping them  improve instructional practices:

 

  1. Help plan lessons with individual teachers and groups of teachers
  2. Teach demonstration lessons
  3. Co-teach with other math teachers
  4. Allow other math teachers to observe classes taught by instructional leader to model intended practices
  5. Demonstrate effective co-teaching and differentiated instruction
  6. Work with teachers individually or in groups to analyze student work and adjust instruction according to the results of that analysis

 

  1. Work one-on-one with new teachers, in conjunction with their teacher mentor
  2. Provide reading opportunities regarding current research on mathematics education and lead related discussions at team and/or department meetings
  3. The Mathematics Instructional Leaders will not be responsible for the evaluation of unit members nor shall they perform any observations that will be used in the APPR process

  1. Provide job-embedded professional development
  2. Working in conjunction with coordinator/team leader, design and provide professional development to meet the ever-changing needs of our teachers
  3. Research appropriate professional development opportunities

 

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Ten month teacher work schedule
  • Up to five (5) days each paid summer work to facilitate district/building/department identified work

 

Job Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

Each Math Instructional Leader shall:

  1. Hold a Master’s Degree with a minimum of five (5) years successful 6-12 teaching experience required as evidenced by substantial learning gains; including work with at-risk students;
  2. Be certified in 7-12 Mathematics.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of child growth and development, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment and diagnosis, and research related to learning.
  4. Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of the content field.
