- Job Description
- Provide expressive and receptive interpreting in classrooms and at special events during the school day and in emergency situations before and after school
- Be prepared for daily course content in regular or special classes
- Serve as an appropriate language model for students via quality interpreting
- Assist students who are deaf/hard of hearing to develop the necessary skills to successfully participate in the mainstream and to become appropriate users of interpreting services
- Provide ongoing support for helping students and staff learn about deaf culture, sign language and Interpreter use, as appropriate
- Determine ways to use time productively, by consulting with teacher, administrators and other service providers
- Participate as a member of a team with the teacher(s), teacher of the deaf, speech/language therapist, counselor and parent in the designing and implementing of the appropriate education program for students who are deaf/hard of hearing
- Meet the Teacher of the Deaf and notetaker, if they are provided, on a regular basis to share information; meet with appropriate other team member to share information and problem solve as necessary
- Participate in developing Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and preparing for Committee on Special Education meetings as needed
- Participate in professional development activities including BOCES and District meetings when schedule permits

- Graduation from high school
- Graduation from and Interpreter Training Program recognized by te Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf
- Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered college or univeristy with an Associate's degree in Interpreting for the Hearing Imparied
- Transliterating Certification, Interpreting Certification, or COmprehensive Skills Certification from the Registraty of Interpreters for the Deaf
- Experience in support service programs with students who are deaf/hard of hearing
- 1 year full-time experience working with school age children
